The Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was compiled by American psychologists Achenbach TM and Edelbrock C. It is a professional tool used to assess children’s broad spectrum of behavioral and emotional problems and social abilities. This online test is designed to help parents understand their children’s behavioral characteristics and possible psychological needs.
Introduction to CBCL scale:
CBCL is a scale widely used in clinical and research fields. It covers two major parts of children’s social abilities and behavioral problems. This scale is included in the ‘Manual of Commonly Used Psychological Assessment Scales’ General Mental Health and Behavioral Problems Scale. It is comprehensive in content, has proven reliability and validity, and is suitable for behavioral assessment of children aged 4-18 years.
Social abilities include: I. Participate in sports; Ⅱ. Participate in activities; Ⅲ. Participate in after-school hobby groups (groups); Ⅳ. Participate in housework; V. Communicate; VI. Get along with others; Ⅶ Study in school. This part of the content consists of 3 subscales, namely activity ability (including items I, II, and IV); social ability (items III, V, and VI); school ability (general item VII), for children aged 6-18 years. .
Behavioral problems include: withdrawal, somatic complaints, anxiety/depression, social problems, thinking problems, attention problems, disciplinary behavior, aggressive behavior, and sexual problems (boys/girls aged 4 to 11 years). According to the two-dimensional division of behavioral problems, they are divided into internalizing and externalizing. Internalizing is an emotional problem mainly manifested by withdrawal, somatization, anxiety and depression; externalizing is an emotional problem characterized by aggression. , disciplinary violations are the main behavioral problems.
CBCL (1991) has been used in various scientific research projects in China to evaluate children’s ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, etc.
Testing Guide:
- Parents are asked to fill in each item truthfully based on their child’s performance in the last 6 months.
- The scale requires parents or guardians who are in close contact with children to fill it out. Parents with a junior high school education or above can usually complete it in 15-20 minutes. If parents have difficulty filling in the information, the investigator can read it to the parents and record their answers.
- The scale contains multiple items, such as childish behavior, poor attention, argumentativeness, etc. Parents need to choose the corresponding options based on the actual situation of their children.
