'Her singing will always remain in the world, but no one knows her pain.' - On July 5, 2023, Coco Lee died of suicide due to depression. We regret her departure and must face up to a serious problem: depression is quietly devouring life.
Coco Lee: The person who always uses a smile to fight against the darkness
CoCo Lee, born in Hong Kong in 1975, is a representative figure of Chinese pop music. Her achievements are endless—
- 'Rookie Singing Competition' debuted, and its first album was a hit;
- Working with Mariah Carey and Wyclef Jean to make their debut on the international stage;
- Singing the theme songs of Disney's 'Mulan' and 'The Lion King 2', she became the first Chinese female singer to enter the Oscars.
However, such a star who shines in front of the camera chose to leave the world in July 2023 due to long-term depression .
She still posted a message to encourage herself after the operation: 'After the dark clouds pass, the sun will come out.'
However, the sun did not rise again this time.

Depression is a silent killer
Coco Lee's death is not an isolated case. Remember them?
- Leslie Cheung (2003)——“From now on, there is no brother in the world”;
- Kim Jong Hyun ( member of SHINee) - Leave a suicide note: 'I have been swallowed by loneliness';
- Cui Xueli , Qiao Renliang , Chen Baolian ...
The tragedy of these public figures makes us understand that depression is not just a depression, but a real, fatal mental illness.
What is depression?
Depression is a mental illness characterized by long-term, persistent depression , and common symptoms include:
- Loss of interest and motivation in everything;
- Continuous fatigue and difficulty concentrating;
- Frequent self-blame and self-deprecating;
- Negative thoughts or behaviors such as self-harm and suicide occur.
Common triggers of depression:
- Genetic susceptibility;
- Emotional trauma;
- Long-term chronic stress;
- Occupational/family imbalance;
- Chronic pain or physical illness.
💡Key reminder: Depression can be treated scientifically, but the premise is to be discovered, understood, and supported.
What can we do for people with depression?
✅ 1. Correct understanding: Depression is not 'pretentious'
Please stop saying to depression:
- 'You're too vulnerable.'
- “Just go out for a walk more.”
- 'Why are you so unsatisfied?'
Such statements will only aggravate their loneliness and shame.
✅ 2. Provide listening rather than persuasion
You don't need to solve their problems, you just need to listen carefully and accompany them sincerely , so that they know:
'You are not alone.'
✅ 3. Encourage but do not force them to seek professional help
- Guide them to try psychological counseling;
- Remind them about the scientific nature of medication treatment;
- If the other party clearly expresses suicidal tendencies, contact your family or professional assistance agency immediately.

Why do we always realize that they are depressed “afterwards”?
because:
- Depression is often hidden very deeply. Many patients seem to be sunny on the surface, but their hearts are on the verge of collapse ;
- Many families/workplaces are very secretive about mental health topics;
- There is a widespread stigma of 'psychological problems' in society.
Saving a person is not about what 'great things' you do, but whether you treat them as human beings.
A call to readers
- If someone around you often says, 'I can't hold on', please listen carefully to them;
- If you are struggling in the abyss of emotions, please be brave enough to seek help from the outside world.
