The Mental Health Scale for Chinese Middle School Students (MSSMHS/MMHI-60) is one of the widely used mental health assessment tools for middle school students in my country. It was compiled by Professor Wang Jisheng, a famous psychologist at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on the basis of fully combining the cultural background, learning situations and behavioral characteristics of Chinese middle school students.

The full English name of the Chinese Middle School Students Mental Health Scale is 'The Middle Sehool Students Mental Health Scale, MSSMHS', also known as 'Mental Health Inventory of Middle-School Students, MMHI-60'. This scale is a symptom-oriented mental health diagnostic scale . It is mainly used to screen and evaluate the psychological problems or psychological disorder tendencies that may occur in middle school students (including junior high school students and high school students) during their learning and growth . It has wide application value in school mental health surveys, educational scientific research and psychological counseling practice.

MSSMHS/MMHI-60 scale structure and assessment content

The Mental Health Scale for Chinese Middle School Students (MSSMHS/MMHI-60) contains a total of 60 mandatory questions and adopts a five-level scoring system to systematically assess 10 common mental health dimensions among middle school students. Each dimension consists of 6 questions:

  1. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms : obsessive thoughts and behaviors such as repeatedly checking homework, repeatedly counting, excessive worry about grades, etc.
  2. Paranoia : distrust of others, feeling being discussed or targeted, thinking others are treating you unfairly
  3. Hostility : easily agitated, argumentative, impulsive, difficult to control temper
  4. Interpersonal tension and sensitivity : social discomfort, over-sensitivity to other people’s evaluations, emotional vulnerability
  5. Depression : low mood, lack of confidence in the future, listlessness, easy to blame oneself or cry
  6. Anxiety : nervousness, uneasiness, unexplained worry and fear
  7. Study pressure (tendency to be tired of studying) : heavy learning burden, fear of exams, dislike of homework and school
  8. Maladaptation : difficulty adapting to school life, teaching methods, or home learning environment

  10. Psychological imbalance : sensitive to comparison results, feeling that teachers or parents are unfair to themselves, etc.

Through these dimensions, the MSSMHS/MMHI-60 scale can more comprehensively reflect the psychological state of middle school students in aspects such as emotion, learning, interpersonal relationships, and self-perception .

MSSMHS/MMHI-60 scale scoring method and explanation of reliability and validity

Each question in the Chinese Mental Health Scale for Middle School Students adopts a five-point scoring standard of 1-5 points :
From 'no obvious problem' to 'very severe symptoms', the higher the score, the more obvious the degree of the psychological problem.

  • Score of each subscale : Divide the total score of the corresponding 6 questions by 6 to get the average score of the psychological dimension
  • Total average mental health score : The total score of 60 questions is divided by 60, which is used to evaluate the overall mental health level.

Based on the average item score and total average score, it can be preliminarily judged whether there are mild, moderate or severe mental health problems , providing scientific basis for psychological counseling and educational intervention.

Research shows that the Chinese Middle School Student Mental Health Scale has good psychometric indicators:

  • Test-retest reliability : 0.716 – 0.905
  • Homogeneity reliability : 0.6501 – 0.8577
  • Split-half reliability : 0.6341 – 0.8400
  • Good structural validity : the total score of the scale is highly correlated with each subscale, and reasonable distinctions are maintained between each subscale.

These data show that this scale has high stability, reliability and scientificity in the mental health assessment of middle school students.

MSSMHS/MMHI-60 Scale Online Test Results Interpretation

Explanation on the test results : The original scale of the Chinese Middle School Student Mental Health Inventory (MMHI-60) contains 10 mental health subscales, which reflect different types of psychological problem tendencies. In standard applications, these subscales are usually calculated separately and interpreted comprehensively by professionals.

In this test, the system currently only provides the total mental health score and overall level assessment based on all 60 items , which is used to help students initially understand their recent overall mental state.

In-depth analysis of each specific psychological dimension (such as depression, anxiety, study pressure, interpersonal relationships, etc.) needs to be judged in combination with subscale scores and professional interviews. The results of this test do not constitute a clear diagnostic conclusion for any single psychological problem .
