According to a survey by the World Health Organization, about 100 million people worldwide suffer from depression, and the number is increasing, becoming today’s ’epidemic’. Depression is a symptom of neurosis. It is a disease caused by body dysfunction caused by excessive brain use, mental stress, and physical fatigue. It includes many diseases such as insomnia, anxiety, hypochondria, phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, neurasthenia, and neuropathic vomiting. Depression is often manifested as difficulty falling asleep, sometimes it can sleep, but it wakes up after 1 to 2 hours, and it is difficult to fall asleep after waking up. Some people also stay awake all night; they are restless, unable to control the fear of not having a clear object or content, or the painful experience of worry. Some people show depression as the main symptoms, depression, sadness, inferiority complex, and a significant decrease in interest in daily activities, or even loss. Some people are suspicious and always suspect that others are saying bad things about themselves. They are very worried that they are not good for their health, but they cannot control themselves. Pay too much attention to your body (including various physiological changes). Some patients, however, show that they are forced to think about something or something and cannot control themselves. Symptoms of neurasthenia are manifested as mental fatigue, dull reaction, inattention, memory loss, inability to last for work and study, headaches, loss of appetite, laziness, etc. Depression may be caused by the following factors: stressful life, stomach discomfort, headache, insufficient nutrition, poor diet, sugar, mononuclear leukocytosis, thyroid disease, endometritis (related to women’s depression), any serious physical harm, allergies. Some people become more melancholy when the days are short in winter and the nights are long. Depression is a periodic attack that can occur at any age, but is more common in early middle age and is particularly common among the elderly. Depression occurs due to disturbances in the areas in the brain that regulate emotions. Most people can deal with daily emotional tension, but when this stress is too high and beyond what their adjustment function can handle, depression may arise. In addition, depression is also closely related to a person’s personality. The personality traits of this patient are generally introvert, withdrawn, sentimental and strong dependence. Depression is very harmful to people. It will completely change people’s understanding of the world and interpersonal relationships, and may even end their lives by suicide. If depression patients are full of depression and do not seek medical treatment in time, the result is that about 10% of the patients are suicidal, and some patients even become the protagonists of domestic violence or child abuse. But this does not mean that depression is necessarily a terminal illness. At least for now, it can be treated through psychological treatment, drug treatment and other means. The adverse effects of depression not only occur to the patient, but also affect the patient’s family and friends. In severe cases, the victim may not be able to live a normal life, cause obstacles to work, study, diet and sleep, and cannot enjoy any happy activities. Indeed, depression can make people feel unrestrained, and according to records, nearly 12% of patients feel powerless. On the other hand, depression can also increase the economic burden of individuals, families, or the entire community. Some of the economic burden is obvious and can be calculated, but some cannot be estimated. The estimated economic burdens include the need for health and social services, unemployment, reduced productivity, impact on family members and caregivers, crimes and public safety hazards to varying degrees and negative impacts of suicide. In Western countries, depression is the most common mental illness, with the incidence of lifelong depression between 6% and 8%. As the population gradually ages, the incidence of depression among people over 60 is as high as 20% to 50%. Among the patients, 65% to 80% will have serious suicidal intentions, 45% to 55% will have suicide or self-harm behaviors, and the lifelong suicide mortality rate is as high as 15% to 25%. According to the World Health Report 2002 published by the World Health Organization, depression has become the fourth largest disease in the world, and by 2020, depression may become the second largest disease after heart disease. If you want to know whether depression is threatening your health, please do this test. Please answer ‘yes’ or ’no’ based on your physical and emotional feelings over the past week.
